Best Fish and Chips in York

"The Wetherby Whaler" in York is a renowned restaurant that belongs to the family-run chain of the same name, dedicated to the tradition of high-quality British fish and chips. The chain was founded in 1969 by Phillip and Janine Murphy in Tadcaster and has since become a staple in Yorkshire, with locations in several cities, including York. The restaurant in York impresses with its modern, functional architecture and offers a relaxed atmosphere that appeals to both travelers and locals. It is known for its generous portions, sustainable ingredients, and friendly service, which is a hallmark of the chain.

Sustainable restaurants in Yorkshire

At the heart of the menu is the classic dish: freshly prepared fish and chips. Particularly noteworthy is the "Regular Haddock," a juicy piece of skinless and boneless haddock, fried in a crispy batter made from Maris Piper potatoes – a dish that has been awarded multiple times for its quality and consistency. The sides, such as "Mushy Peas" or the creamy "Curry Sauce," complement the fish perfectly and add an authentically British touch to the meal. For those seeking variety, the restaurant also offers alternatives like "Chicken Goujons," tender chicken strips in a light batter that are especially popular with younger guests. A sweet ending could be the "Strawberry Cheesecake," which, with its fruity freshness, provides a contrast to the hearty main course.

Traditional British cuisine experience

The restaurant places great emphasis on sustainability, reflected in its use of MSC-certified fish – a sign that taste is not the only priority here, but also the responsibility towards the environment. In addition to the classic offerings, there are gluten-free options and smaller meals for children, making Wetherby Whaler an accessible place for all age groups. The option to enjoy food in the restaurant or take it away increases flexibility for guests.

Gluten-free options in restaurants

The interior is bright and spacious, with a capacity for larger groups, making it ideal for family celebrations or travel groups. The open design and air-conditioned spaces ensure comfort, while the staff – often described as warm and attentive – make sure that guests feel welcome. A special feature is the connection to the local community: the company regularly engages in social projects, such as fundraising for charity, which earns it additional points with visitors.

Family-friendly restaurants in York

The drink selection is simple yet fitting: alongside classic soft drinks, there is a range of beers and teas that complement the food. The option to order through a "Click and Collect" system is particularly appreciated, making the service modern and convenient – a sign that Wetherby Whaler keeps up with the times while not forgetting its roots.

Busy fish and chips restaurant. Very pleasant, good food and great value. Eat in or takeaway. Well worth a visit . The regular fish n chips was enough for me but if you are very hungry you can go large or go for a whaler which must be bloody huge judging by the rest of the menu, next time for me.

Cracking fish and chips, despite the place being busier than a seagull at a beach picnic the staff were very efficient and attentive. 10/10 would battle the crowds again

Fine. I’d recommend Jim Collis and Heworth Plaice over this. We got takeaway £20 for 2 regular and 1 mushy peas and 1 bread roll. Strangely both our fishes were the exact same size and had right angle corners. They also dripped what looks like water out. They don’t do small portions after 3. We got 2 regular. About the size of the above place’s smalls. Nice chips and batter fresh.

Lovely fish and chips as always. Young lady who served us pleasant and helpful. Met a lovely gentleman whilst enjoying meal. Just felt the Regular size fish a bit small (Murgatroyds much bigger!) but not complaining it might be what your feeding them. Thank you.

Sadly gone down hill since the last visit. Takeaway used this time... batter on the fish was overdone and the server over did the salt. The fish was lovely once the batter was removed. Shame really

Ordered a takeaway online. Food not as good as the chippy in nearby Haxby. Order quickly prepared. Plenty of food. Free car parking.

Dear Googlers. While Betty's is the afternoon tea champions of the Republic of Yorkshire. Wetherby Whaler restaurants are the fish and chips champions. Staff are attentive and friendly. Food is fish and chips. Proper fish and chips. Bread and butter. Homemade puddings and plenty of it. Grandad loved it. I couldn't make my mind up so a combination of scampi and fish chips it was.

Disappointing that a fish and chip restaurant serves fish with batter that is over cooked on the outside, soggy on the inside and greasy. A sign that the fat is too hot, probably to cook it quickly as there was a long queue for takeaway. The mayonnaise was tasteless and the mushy peas were £2.50 a portion. Definitely not value for money but the chips were good although the portion was small. No cod on the menu either. Service was good.

We all had the same, regular haddock, it was very disappointing really, small and thin fish and oily batter. We’ve been coming occasionally for a very long time, we used to go home full, It’s certainly not what it used to be,
